Kiss 2009 Hello- OFF LEASH! Walking the dog Theater’s Improv Ensemble

Sat. Jan 31, 2009 at 7:30pm

An evening to benefit the Complementary Therapies Cancer Care Fund at the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation

Join us for an evening of improvisational theater, fun, and (who knows) even unexpected profundity.

OFF LEASH! is your chance to see actors exploring the art of spontaneous imagination, thinking on their feet, acting from their guts, and being in the now…

Please note: side effects may include prolonged smiling without an apparent cause, delight in absurd or everyday situations, and a desire for the politically incorrect.

“Perspicacious, silly, intelligent, off-the-cuff, quick-witted…”

Charcoal and the figure in the heart of winter, life painting workshop

Sat. Jan 24, 2009 at 10:00am - Sun. Feb 1, 2009 at 5:30pm

LIFE DRAWING WORKSHOP
for adults & teens

A contemplative practice to deepen seeing

Students are invited to deepen their seeing, learning how to continually draw more out of that which seems familiar, experiencing the richness of the world observed closely and felt intimately.  The excitement in the process lies not only in discovering what lies before our eyes and revealing and expressing this through paintings, but also recognizing the relevance of the process to all forms of study and exploration, and its potential for shedding light on life, humanity, nature.

This workshop for adults & teens explores our visual world, the meaning residing within the visual, and the artistic expression that emerges through this seeing. Working from the figure within still-life environment, the study focuses on color, pattern, form, shape, value, surface preparation, composition and space, as well as the technical considerations of the media used. Artists’ work throughout history is studied to understand the relationships between these and the study process and the work made in class. The intent is to develop and nurture each student’s unique potential. Students of all levels are welcome. Study is progressive, building on previous work in the studio.

instructor
Wendy Shuster

She founded and then has directed a teaching studio in the Hudson Valley for over 14 years, and recently expanded its reach to NYC . While she earned a degree from Bucknell University, the most compelling and inspirational study she experienced was during four years of private advanced work with Nicholas Buhalis in his Woodstock and NYC studio schools and galleries.  She is deeply immersed in and excited about recent work with and from the movement explorations of modern dancers.

GROUNDS AT LINDENWALD REOPEN

Mon. Dec 22, 2008 at 12:13pm

The grounds of Martin Van Buren National Historic Site in Kinderhook, NY which were temporarily closed last week as a result of the severe ice storm have reopened.  Visitor pathways and the areas around the historic mansion are once again open after maintenance workers removed many broken limbs and branches which littered the grounds of the historic site.  The north woods of the site remain closed to visitors due to the threat of branches which are hanging from many trees.  That area will remain closed to visitors until further notice until the danger can be removed.

The grounds of the park are open from 7:00 am to sunset throughout the year.  Tours of President Van Buren’s mansion have ended for the season and will resume on May 18 of the new year.

Martin Van Buren National Historic Site is located on Route 9H, two miles south of the village of Kinderhook, New York.  For additional information call the site at 518-758-9689 or visit www.nps.gov/mava.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL-presented by Walking the dog Theater

Sun. Dec 21, 2008 at 2:00pm - Sat. Dec 6, 2008 at 10:00am

“Marley was dead: to begin with.  There is no doubt whatever about that.  The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner.  Scrooge signed it: and Scrooge’s name was good upon ‘Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to.  Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail…” from A CHRISTMAS CAROL
This seasonal favorite, directed by Ted Pugh, creates the experience of Charles Dickens’ tour of New England, when the author performed his famous story for American audiences.  David Anderson, who performed the story last year with musical accompaniment by Jonathan Talbott, dramatizes the story in the intimate setting of Space 360.

Gwen Gould, conductor
with instrumental ensemble
Solos to be sung by entire sections!

Bring your voice out of the shower and jumpstart the Holiday Season by singing Handel’s Messiah with your family, friends, and neighbors!

What is a Sing? It’s when YOU, the members of the audience, become the performers. It’s what you dream about when you sing your favorite arias in the shower!

Supported by an instrumental ensemble of strings including some students from the Columbia Festival Orchestra’s “Take a Seat…in the Orchestra” mentoring program and conducted by Gwen Gould, you will have the opportunity to sing the Christmas Portion of Messiah and end with the Halleluia Chorus.

“This is not a performance, it’s an event!” says conductor Gould, “and a joyful way to start the holiday season.” Scores will be provided and light refreshments will be served during the break.
